“O-Edo-Nihonbashi-Nana ["nana" means "seven"] tsudachi,” early departure, around 6:00 a.m., current time. This is a view looking across Nihonbashi Bridge, in Edo (Tokyo), from which all distances were measured. There is a daimyo's cortège coming into view over the summit. In the foreground is a group of five fish vendors (and a sixth partly hidden) getting out of the way, to the left, and two dogs on the right. This bridge was located in the center of Edo and was the starting point of the Tokaido.
