Perhaps the most important and most well known is the Kitsune Odori (literally, Fox dance) this is held during Obon and includes many other dances.
Himeshima Bon Odori is said to be a development from the dances of the prayers to Amida Buddha. This original form leads to the “Kitsune Odori” , “Aya Odori” , “Zeni Daiko Odori”, and the “Saruman Dayu Odori”. The Bon Odori events occur every year from August 14th to the 17th (the 15th and 16th are the high points of the festival) with traditional and modern dance. All four traditional dances are designated intangible cultural assets by the municipality.
