Mii-dera temple is the headquarters of the Tendai-jimon sect. In the precinct, there is a well called "akai," which was used for the first baths of Emperor Tenji, Emperor Tenmu, and Emperor Jitou. Because of this, the temple used to be called "Mii-no-tera" (temple with the sacred well). Later, it started to be called "Mii-dera" (three-well-temple). More than 100 properties in this temple are designated as important national cultural properties as well as national treasures, including the golden hall, which is designated as a national treasure.
