• Nishijin-ori (Kyoto brocade weave): The Kyo Nishijin-ori, a woven fabric from the Nishijin in Kyoto, is woven of silk gold, silver and colorful thread. The Nishijin-ori weaving industry developed as a court industry, with the establishment of a weavers’ department upon the transfer of the capital to Kyoto (794 onward). Though the industry was once on the verge of extinction at the time of the Onin Civil War, weavers who had left Kyoto for outlying districts returned after the war to restore the textiles industry. Nishijin-ori is well known in the world of textiles as an artistic and high-quality fabric with a wide range of products, such as sashes, kimonos, and other decorative fabrics.
