Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942)
A pioneer in Japanese modern design, Kamisaka Sekka studied in Europe, where he became an adherent to the "art nouveau" school. Upon returning to Japan, he produced works in a variety of media. He illustrated Japanese subjects in a hanga format with flat planes of vivid color. He is known as a Rimpa Master of modern design and was a pioneer in that field.
