Omi Sensu
Shiga Prefecture has a long history of producing senkotsu (fan ribs or bones). Particularly, 300-year old Takashima senkotsuh boasts as much as 90% share in Japan. While most of them are shipped to Kyoto for Kyo sense (Kyoto folding fan), some are locally made into Omi sense. Recently, in order to promote the brand name, folding fans with characteristic Shiga patterns such as fish in Lake Biwa, traditional Otsu-e paintings and the famous eight beauty spots around Lake Biwa are produced and gaining popularity in and out of the prefecture.
