Product Description

Konyo Bankoku Zen-zu (Map of the World) by Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci (Italian), 1602, 6 panels. Important Cultural Property, Nanba Shotaro Collections.

This map was published in Beijing when Ricci stayed there in order to preach and propagate the Christian faith in China. There are 3 originals that survive now. One is in the Vatican and the other two are in Japan.

Japan was an isolated country between 1639 and 1853, except for trade with the Dutch and the Chinese; one of the main reasons for this isolation was the prohibition of Christianity.
