Konyo Bankoku Zen-zu (Map of the World) by Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci (Italian), 1602, 6 panels. Important Cultural Property, Nanba Shotaro Collections.
This map was published in Beijing when Ricci stayed there in order to preach and propagate the Christian faith in China. There are 3 originals that survive now. One is in the Vatican and the other two are in Japan.
• Japan was an isolated country between 1639 and 1853, except for trade with the Dutch and the Chinese; one of the main reasons for this isolation was the prohibition of Christianity.
