Product Description

Yugawara-onsen is a hot spring town, which has a magnificent view of Sagami Bay, as well as mild weather throughout the year. This beautiful spot has been known as an ancient spa town since it was described in "Manyo-shu," Japan's oldest collection of poems. The rows of ryokan, hot spring inns, are reminders of the good times of the past. In the latter part of the 1800s, after the Meiji Era, Yugawara's mild climate and the abundance of lush nature fascinated many famous Japanese novelists, such as Soseki Natsume, Toson Shimazaki, and Ryunosuke Akutagawa. The town has become known as a health resort associated with these novelists ever since.

Another feature in Yugawara is that it has many historical sites that are connected to the Kamakura Shogunate that wielded power during the 13th century. There is Jogan-ji Temple, for instance, where members of the Doi family, who ruled Yugawara, were buried within the temple. The temple has an enormous cypress tree, estimated to be 800 years old, which is listed as a natural monument.

Yugawara-onsen has a reputation of being able to cure any disease, while "Doppo-no-yu," the largest footbath facility in Japan, and "Kogome-no-yu," a hot spring for day trips, welcome many visitors. The Yukake (water-splashing)-matsuri is a unique festival held every spring. It attracts large crowds every year.
